Texas leads the country in its unprecedented commitment to preventing cancer and researching and developing new technologies to detect, treat, and cure cancer. Created by the Texas Legislature and approved by two statewide votes in 2007 and 2019, the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) is the second largest public funder of cancer research in the U.S., following only the National Cancer Institute. And our dedication to the fight against cancer is uniquely Texan.
This 2025 Annual Report highlights CPRIT’s mission and how we support those working every day to end the burden of cancer for all Texans.

Kristen DoyleChief Executive Officer
Fellow Texans,
I am proud to introduce the 2025 CPRIT Annual Report, a review of our sixteenth year as the state’s cancer-fighting agency.
This has been a year of monumental change, progress, and success for CPRIT and our grantees. As of August 31, 2025, CPRIT has awarded more than $3.9 billion to 149 Texas institutions, community organizations, and companies through 2,148 merit-based grants to prevent, diagnose, treat, and survive cancer. Through CPRIT, Texas is the second largest public funder of cancer research in the U.S., following only the National Cancer Institute.
Unfortunately, the need to accelerate cancer cures and treatments and evidence-based cancer prevention efforts have never been more evident. Cancer remains the leading cause of death for Texans under the age of 85 and the leading cause of disease-related death in children and adolescents in Texas.
While CPRIT funds research and prevention efforts for all cancer types, this year’s report highlights the impact of CPRIT funding on the most common and most deadly cancers in Texas: lung, liver, colon, pancreas, prostate, and breast. These cancers represent more than half of all cancers diagnosed annually in Texas. The 2025 report also addresses cancer’s financial toll on the state and the positive economic results of CPRIT funding.
CPRIT recognizes all those who strive to reduce the burden of cancer across Texas. Each day our grantees are developing groundbreaking treatments that will help Texans survive cancer and ensuring that more Texans have access to comprehensive cancer prevention services and screenings. Their dedication and the hope provided through their unflagging efforts continue to inspire us in our daily work.
On behalf of the CPRIT Oversight Committee and the CPRIT staff, we appreciate the awesome responsibility and opportunity incumbent with making our state a worldwide leader in the fight against cancer. We are honored to keep the promise that together, Texas will conquer cancer.
Sincerely,
Kristen Pauling Doyle
